The Surgical Department at Alder Hey offers treatment for infants, children and adolescents for conditions which may require an operation. Our team of Consultant Surgeons and Junior Doctors treat both general and specialist paediatric surgical conditions. We also have several surgical trainees working in our team.
Children’s General Surgery
The Department caters for children who require surgery for conditions such as hernias, undescended testis, foreskin problems and skin and soft tissue swellings, from Liverpool and the surrounding area. Several outpatients’ clinics are performed at Alder Hey, and at district hospitals together with local Paediatric colleagues. We visit the following hospitals:
Arrowe Park, Crewe, Chester, Shrewsbury, Warrington, Wrexham (clinic)
Glan Clwyd, Preston (clinic and operating), Bangor, Ormskirk & Southport and Whiston.
Children’s Specialist Surgery
We also provide treatment for the full range of surgical conditions, with the exclusion of transplant surgery. Our specialist services include:
Surgery for chest and lung problems
Surgery for feeding problems and gastroesophageal reflux
Surgery for gall bladder and some liver problems
Surgery for bowel problems
Minimally invasive (‘keyhole’) surgery
Children’s cancer (oncology) surgery
Surgery to provide long-term venous access
Newborn surgery.
We are proud of our dedicated Neonatal Surgical Unit, one of only 5 in the country. In this unit our highly trained nurses provide specialised care for newborn babies requiring surgery and vital support for their families.
You may also meet us in the hospital as we support the work of our other specialist colleagues, for example in Cardiac and Neurosurgery, Oncology and Gastroenterology.
Our Consultant Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeons
We also have several senior and junior trainees working as part of the team.
