Dental and Orthodontics

Paediatric Dentistry is the practice teaching and research into the comprehensive and therapeutic oral health care for children from birth to adolescence, including care for children who demonstrate intellectual, medical, physical and psychological and/or emotional problems

The Department of Paediatric Dentistry (C1) at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is a secondary referral centre for children’s and adolescents.  As stated above, we see a whole range of compromised children from those with special needs to those with medical and physical disabilities.  We are also able to provide a full range of oral health care for anxious children, this may include treatment under local anaesthetic with concomitant use of behavioural management skills.  Treatment under general anaesthesia can be provided if deemed necessary because of various medical or behavioural problems.

The Paediatric Dentistry Department has 2 NHS Consultants and one NHS Specialist Registrar and one Honorary Specialist Registrar.  Outpatients are seen in C1, whilst inpatients and managed on L2 and K1 day ward.

The Department works closely with the Oral/Maxillofacial Unit, Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Unit and the Orthodontic Department, all based in C1.
