We are proud to have a dedicated surgical neonatal unit, the first to be opened in the UK and one of only 5 in the country. Within this unit we provide specialist care for newborn babies who require surgery born in Liverpool and the surrounding areas, and from wider areas of the Northwest and North Wales.
Our Neonatal Unit was set up in the 1950's and has looked after thousands of babies with many different conditrions. Many of the babies cared for on the Unit have had or will require a surgical procedure.
Our Consultant Surgeons are trained in the full range of neonatal surgery, performing operations for correction of congenital problems such as abdominal wall defects, oesophageal atresia, diaphragmatic hernia, bowel obstruction, Hirschsprung’s disease, neonatal tumours, urological conditions and imperforate anus. We have strong links with local and regional medical neonatal units, and provide surgical care for premature infants in the region.
Our team of highly skilled nurses are expert at caring for babies with airway, respiratory and gastrointestinal problems. They are trained in post-operative care and pain relief for the newborn and in managing feeding problems and stomas. In addition to this, important input from specialised dieticians, pharmacists and speech therapists is always available.
Our nurses are also adept at supporting parents and families through the very stressful experience of having a newborn baby who needs surgery. We are keen to promote breastfeeding and have facilities and expertise to help new mums to express breastmilk. A midwife regularly visits the hospital for post-delivery assessments. If, during pregnancy, the baby is diagnosed with a problem which may require surgery, our friendly and approachable staff are happy to arrange parental visits to the unit.
