Local celebrity Suzanne Collins will join young oncology patients from Alder Hey today at a special ‘Oscar’ style ceremony at Liverpool ’s famous St George’s Hall.

This prestigious event has been organised by Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Twin Vision – a registered charity which advances the education of the public, particularly but not exclusively young disabled/non disabled people - to showcase animation projects created by the children over the past year. The animated films will be screened for the first time at the event which takes place at 2pm.

Children who took part in the project will have the film star treatment on the red carpet before viewing their animations on the big screen. The event will be hosted by Paul Gavin, former oncology patient at Alder Hey, who will present the children with a gong for all their hard work and creative ideas. Following Friday’s event, the animations will be part of a free six week exhibition at St Georges Hall.

Twin Vision has been working with patients at Alder Hey for over a year to advance their education using interactive techniques like animation. This project was funded and supported by Alder Hey’s Imagine Appeal, BBC Children in Need, First Light and the UK Film Council funded by the National Lottery. The partnership between the Oncology department and Twin Vision has been a welcome distraction for the children during their treatment and visits to hospital. The animation project has been an accessible, educational, interactive resource.

Eleven year old patient Max Tami (who appeared on this year’s BBC Children in Need) says: “I have really enjoyed my time making ‘Super Mouse’. It has taken my mind off what was happening during my visits and gives the children here something to look forward to. I’m really excited to show everyone my work at the event and can’t wait to see everyone else’s. My mum and dad are really proud of what I have achieved.”

Pip Bradshaw, Play Specialist at Alder Hey, added “Our patients can be with us for quite a long time so a project like this has helped to make hospital trips more interesting and has allowed them to express themselves in a creative and fun way. Some of our young patients were even given the opportunity to speak about the project and show their animation off on BBC Children in Need last year. I can’t wait to see the finished animations!”
